Davos, the eco-sustainable Thunit

“We are very confident about the restart of Thunit as the shoe has a desire for elegance again, so heels and wedges are back on the catwalk,” says Mirko Vialetto, new Italy marketing and sales manager. “Thunit used to be Davos’ core business, today it represents 30% of our production which is today addressed to more technical rubbers, a sector that registered a huge growth. However, Thunit remains our reference eco-sustainable product.” Thunit rubber sheets are used for the production of soles for elegant and leisure footwear and they stand out among the best alternatives to natural leather due to their features, such as flexibility, workability, resistance to abrasion and waterproofing. Now they become eco-friendly. “Thunit comes from Thunit itself,” continues Vialetto. “This totally recyclable material, is the result of the reuse of production waste, from the burrs and powders released during the production of the rubber sheets to the cuttings and processing scraps. We have always valued ‘waste’ by transforming it into secondary raw material to be used, in variable percentages, in the creation of new sheets, without the risk of altering the technical characteristics of the product. Until recently, however, this procedure was implemented by inserting only tone-on-tone scraps into the processing cycle (black on black, brown on brown etc), as if to conceal what is now considered an added value. This year, on the contrary, we have decided to offer the Eco-Thunit also in a contrasting tone, deliberately to enhance its eco-sustainability features. It is mostly used in fashion, which is perfect, as it’s particularly suitable for responding to the new needs of this sector to produce in full respect of the environment and society.”
