GSC Group, Arzignano-based company, worldwide acknowledged as a benchmark for the tanning sector, presented the results of a reliable study on the occasion of the XXXV IULTCS Congress: spotlights on solutions aimed at reducing VOC emissions of hides for the automotive sector.“Investigation on VOC Content From Car Interior Finishing Systems and Its Influence on Leather Performances”. This is the title of the in-depth study presented by GSC Group during the XXV Congress organized by IULTCS (International Union of Leather Technologists and Chemists Societies) from June 25th to 28th, 2019, in Dresden – a professional study carried out in a rigorous, methodical way, that put in the limelight an opportunity to markedly reduce VOC emissions in the field of leather finishing systems for car interiors. A pivotal topic, in line with car manufacturers’ needs as well as with the requirements set by increasingly strict protocols and technical specifications, resulting in the demand for leathers featuring top-notch performances, not only in terms of physical-mechanical properties, but also from an environmental point of view, aiming at limiting the emissions of hazardous, polluting substances. The in-house R&D team carried out several field tests and analysis, focusing on the key role played by silicon-based compounds – namely, substances that actively contribute both to the finishing and to the end product quality and, on the other hand, to emissions levels: special attention was therefore paid to the formulation of an innovative range of low-emitting silicones, able to maintain, or even improve, leather’s mechanical performances. The analysis’ results were explained in this study, whose conclusions underlined not only the need to implement alternative tanning methods, but also the important work awaiting chemical companies, acknowledged as an active part of the leather supply chain and charged with the task of developing cutting-edge solutions, in conformity with the most severe regulations when it comes to safety, sustainability and environmental safeguard.
